How this list is made

  • A firm is listed when DFX classes it as private equity (buyout, growth equity, hybrid managers, funds of funds, secondaries, infrastructure, special situations, real estate private equity and venture firms with PE activity; multi-strategy managers that also lend are kept, firms whose only strategy is private credit are on the private credit city pages) and its headquarters city on record is Charlotte, NC. Suburbs are not folded in.
  • A firm also needs evidence on record: a Form ADV filing, a private equity fund, a Form D or a deal. Fund general partner, sidecar, feeder and special purpose vehicles are left out, so one sponsor is not counted once per fund.
  • Deals counts the transactions in the last 36 months in which DFX records the firm as the sponsor (the buyer or backer), each tied to a named public source (an announcement, a press release or a filing).
  • Latest investment is the date of the most recent investment DFX has on record for the firm. Add-on acquisitions by its portfolio companies count as investments, so that date can be an add-on rather than a new platform deal.
  • PE fund assets is the gross asset value of the firm's private equity funds as reported on its 2024 Form ADV; it is a reported figure, not fund size or dry powder. PE funds counts the private equity funds on record from Form ADV and Form D.
  • Ranked by deals in the last 36 months, then reported PE fund assets, then PE funds on record.
  • Each page lists at least 15 firms, at least 5 of them with a deal in the last 36 months; DFX adds places in waves.
