What happened

Internet-reachable remote refrigeration controllers (Danfoss software supplied the affected Belgian systems per Danfoss and Euronews); evaporators forced into continuous defrost. Controller models for non-Belgian sites not confirmed.

Fridges and freezers heated overnight (Belgium about 17 C reported; Sweden up to 50 C at ICA Kvantum Sjobo, 55 C per Newsweek); Belgian stores discarded food. Store counts as reported: Belgium about 40 Delhaize Proxy, 15 Carrefour Shop and Go of 700, 15 Intermarche, 5 Spar, plus a butchery chain and IKEA Mons (Euronews totals 75, arithmetic inconsistent); Ireland 13 SuperValu; Sweden at least 6 ICA and 6 Coop; Estonia 1 Selver; Netherlands at least 17 companies per Danfoss; Finland several K Group stores; Luxembourg Delhaize suspended ordering systems as a precaution. Roughly 80 to 130 sites in total depending on source. No store closures reported. No shortage.

What remains unknown

  • Actor and access method (CCB: perpetrator may never be identified; Integrity 360 analyst suggests stolen logins on internet-exposed controllers)
  • Whether units were end-of-life or current models
  • Total stores and food loss
  • Whether linked to the French October wave beyond the same technique and vendor

Losses: unknown (no quantified loss for any country as of 2 Nov)
