What is the difference between an AI agent and an AI copilot?
Short answer
A copilot makes the person at the keyboard faster; an agent removes the requirement that somebody is at the keyboard. Neither is better in general and they fail in opposite ways.
Why this comparison is hard to answer honestly
The words are used interchangeably in marketing and mean genuinely different things in practice. The difference is not capability, it is who holds the loop.

Choose the alternative if
If your team is at their desks and productive and the complaint is that everything takes too long, a copilot is the cheaper and lower-risk answer, and it will show a return in a week.

If the complaint is that a whole category of work never happens, a copilot cannot help, because there is nobody sitting down to do the work it would accelerate.
