Comparison

The General vs hiring a sales development rep

Should I hire an SDR or use an AI sales agent?

Short answer

An SDR is better when the job needs judgement in a live conversation and you can afford the ramp; the General is better when the constraint is that nobody is doing the follow-up at all.

Why this comparison is hard to answer honestly

This is the comparison most often asked and most often answered dishonestly, because the honest answer turns on something the vendor cannot know: whether you actually have anybody to manage the role.

Of the 8 criteria below, the alternative comes out ahead on 3. We publish that rather than hide it, because a comparison written by one of the two options is only worth reading if it is willing to lose.

Cost per yearGeneral Teams is $499/month plus metered usage. Usage varies with how much work you give it.A US SDR is commonly quoted in the $60,000-$90,000 range all-in once salary, tax, tooling and management time are counted. Ranges vary widely by market; check your own.The General
Time to first outputSame day. There is nothing to migrate and no workflow to build.Weeks to months, counting hiring, onboarding and ramp. The General
Judgement in a live conversationLimited. It handles structured calls and follows the script it is given. It does not read a room. This is the whole reason the role exists. A good SDR hears the objection under the objection and changes course. The alternative
Consistency of follow-upIt does not forget, get busy, or leave. Quiet threads are picked back up on a schedule.Dependent on the person and on whether anybody is managing the cadence. The General
Learning your businessOne conversation, and it is working. It knows what it has been told and what it has read.Slower, and then deeper. A person who has been in the market a year knows things nobody wrote down. The alternative
Management overheadYou approve work and change instructions. There is no one-to-one, no pipeline review, no attrition.Real, and usually borne by the founder at a small company, which is the hidden half of the cost. The General
Scaling up and downChange the plan. Usage follows the work.Hiring and, eventually, not hiring. Both are slow and one is unpleasant. The General
Relationship the market remembersIt writes on your behalf and files what it did. Nobody remembers it.A person builds a network that outlasts any single campaign. The alternative

Choose the alternative if

Hire the SDR if you have somebody who can manage them, if your deals turn on live conversation and reading people, and if you can carry the ramp. A good SDR with a good manager beats any current AI on the parts of the job that are actually about being a person, and you should not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Choose the General if

Use the General if the real problem is that the follow-up is not happening at all, if you are the person who would have to manage the hire, or if the volume you need does not justify a salary. It is also the better first move before a hire, because it tells you what the role would actually need to do.
