Registered investment adviser (RIA)

A registered investment adviser (RIA) is a firm paid to advise others about securities that is registered with the SEC or with one or more state securities regulators. Advisers generally register with the SEC once they manage around $100 million or more in regulatory assets, and with their home state below that, subject to exceptions. An RIA owes its clients a fiduciary duty and discloses its business, owners, fees and conflicts on Form ADV.
