Family office
A family office is a private firm that manages the investments, and often the wider financial affairs, of one wealthy family (a single family office) or a small number of families (a multi-family office). A single family office that advises only family clients can rely on the SEC's family office rule to stay outside investment adviser registration, which is why many file little or nothing publicly. Larger offices increasingly invest directly in private companies, alongside or instead of through funds.
