Where the data comes from

Public and regulatory records: federal regulator filings, federal program data, state registries, county and municipal records, securitised debt reporting, court dockets, firm and issuer disclosures, news and newswire, and industry directories. Every fact shows its source.

Sources and coverage lists the source families, how many records each supports, the rights position and the read dates. It deliberately does not publish the full feed roster.

From source to record

  1. Read: a filing or record is collected with its date.
  2. Normalise: names, amounts, dates and places are put into one form.
  3. Resolve: records that are the same institution or person are joined, on an identifier where there is one (CRD, CIK, EIN, LEI) and labelled a candidate where the match is on name alone.
  4. Connect: relationships and events are written between records, each with its source.
  5. Detect: signals and derived figures are computed and labelled as such.

Conflicting sources

Every figure shows the source and date it came from, so when two sources disagree you can see which one you are reading. What a firm says about itself (stated) and what filings and deals show it doing (observed) are kept apart for the same reason.
