A sponsor record
At a glance (who they are, what they buy as claimed, what they have done, who finances them, who to call), then What they claim and what they have done, Who has financed them, Service provider relationships, Principals, Portfolio companies, In the firm's own words, and Evidence.
Terms
- Independent sponsor versus capital provider: the sponsor finds and runs the deal; the capital provider (a bank, BDC, SBIC, mezzanine fund, family office or PE firm) supplies equity or debt for it.
- Verified sponsor: evidence identifies the firm as a sponsor (named as buyer in an announced deal, named by a law firm or capital partner, or its own site says so). Research candidates are not yet verified.
- Buy box versus mandate: a sponsor's buy box is what its deals and vehicles show; a capital provider's mandate is what it or a regulator publishes. In the firm's own words is quoted from its site.
- Repeat relationship: a provider named on two or more of a sponsor's deals. DFX does not recommend a capital provider.
- Sizes are a probable band, never a point.
